What happens when a group of baby boomers, millennials and the Gen Z meet? Fervent idea exchanges, partial cultural transmission and most importantly, tons of fun.
It was palpable when the Team Hadron met in Malaga this month for its annual retreat. There were good food, happy dancing and healthy discussions that brought the team together over things outside the office.
It is not that the team cannot function without such events. In fact, with remote locations, multiple cultures, languages and backgrounds, organizing team building events is a daunting task. So, why is it important for teams to bond beyond their digital connections?
Irrespective of how difficult it is to organize these events, most of the companies today keep a budget - small or big - for team building events. They are important to beat the office boredom and keep the team motivated. Nobody likes to see droopy shoulders walking around the office.
These events improve communication and make the workplace more enjoyable. They motivate employees to express themselves better and be more confident about the organization and its culture. Through these events, teams can discover each other’s strength and weaknesses and function to the best of everyone’s capability, leading to better productivity.
There are many ideas to create interesting team building events. Some of Hadron’s favorites are as below:
•Travelling to a new place
•Going for a Karaoke night
•Dancing the night away
•Potluck lunches or cooking together in the office
•Playing games like who’s the murderer or what’s in the name
There are many other activities such as river rafting, hiking, board games night, cooking or yoga classes, improv workshops that can be planned to bring the teams together. While everything may not be up to everyone’s liking, the idea is to encourage teams to participate.
These activities are not one-time events. Team building is an ongoing process. It helps to build trust between the teams and integrate new members organically. It also forms organizational culture and ensures that everyone shares similar values.
The success of a company does not entirely depend on the number of hours employees spend in the office. It is the quality of their work that matters. This comes from a healthy and happy work environment. Team events foster such an environment. It brings people together. It is essential for the success of any organization. After all, great jobs are not done individually. They are done by a team of people.
